Büdingen is located about 45 km northeast from Frankfurt/Main, at the borderline Vogelsberg and Wetterau, in each case a distant of 12 km from the A 45 and the A 66.
Started with the building of a moated castle in the swamp it developed in the course of the centuries – protected by the powerful walls and towers – into a mediaeval place and later the Ysenburg’s residence. The castle which was enlarged to a palace little by little, is occupied since 1258 by the family of the Duke of Ysenburg and Büdingen.
Two events were important for the development to a „city“: Luther of Ysenburg received from emperor Ludwig to Bavaria the market right for Büdingen in 1330, which probably already exhibited fortifications at this time. Heinrich of Ysenburg issued a liberty letter to the citizen in 1353. Now they were free from deliveries, encumbrances and compulsory labour. However the citizens themselves had to protect walls and gates. Consequently this conditioned the establishment of a shooting club in the same year.
The historical city Büdingen, which ranks among the best preserved medieval city map of Germany, enjoys large touristic attention today and is an experience for visitors.
